Counting Fun!

Mrs. Vande Voorde has taken over our school garden and does such a great job getting the students involved in the process of planting, weeding, watering, picking, and decorating.  As you know, we have been collecting plastic lids all school year for a fun project they will be doing to help decorate the garden later this school year.  When Mrs. Vande Voorde said she was going to count all the lids herself, I volunteered our class to help. She sent us in a whole bunch of blue and green lids.  We sorted them first and then counted them.  The kids had a lot of fun in the process.  We estimated how many we thought their would be before counting and then put them in groups of 100.

Here are all the lids before we sorted them!

The kids had them sorted in no time at all!

After sorting them, we began counting them.  The students made ten rows of ten caps to make groups of 100.

We had a total of 2,254 lids!

We had a lot of fun with this project, I was amazed at how quickly the kids were able to sort and count all of the lids.  Great job boys and girls!

FRACTIONS!!!!

We started learning about fractions in math this week.  The kids are enjoying learning about them.  Most of them already have some knowledge about fractions because they have been working on them in Successmaker! If you look at the chart below, you will see the basics that the students are expected to know for first grade!

Mrs. Rawhoof found this awesome video on youtube to help them learn some of the terms and basics!

St. Patrick's Day Fun!

The kids had so much fun setting up their Leprechaun traps today.  They are pretty sure they are going to be able to outsmart the little guys.   The kids were really clever and even combined a few traps to make them bigger and better!

Fun Fair!!!

We had an assembly to get the kids pumped up for the fun fair this weekend!  Student's names were drawn from the Pro Ticket buckets and students got to play games from the fun fair.  One of our friends got to give the chicken toss game a whirl.  For participating, she received a certificate and tickets to use at games during the fun fair.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the fun fair this year.  I am looking forward to hearing all about it from the students on Monday!  This fun fair is a huge fundraiser for PTO, who does a lot of amazing things for our schools and our kids!  Please come out and support the PTO, there is fun for all ages there!

Please make sure you return the paper attached to your child's report card as soon as possible, along with your decision on the 2nd/3rd grade looping program.  Remember, marking the yes option does not guarantee your child's placement in the program.

The Cat in The Hat and Other Dr. Seuss Fun!

We had a very special visitor this morning...

He read us the story of Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss!

After listening to the story we had some fun with the photo booth props from open house last night!

Mrs. Carlson and I even joined in on the fun!

We watched Horton Hears a Who too!  While we were watching that, we enjoyed some green eggs and ham!

We had so much fun in first grade today!

Concert!

They did such a fabulous job last night!  Mrs. Durand does such a great job planning and teaching the concert songs and choreography!  Concert time always makes me a little sad, because it means our time together is winding down.

Again, the students did a fabulous job, and I couldn't be more proud to be their teacher!
Thank you Mrs. Durand!

Seuss on the Loose!

Dr. Seuss is on the loose in our classroom!  Today we celebrated by reading a few more Dr. Seuss books!  This morning we read If I Ran the Zoo and then the students made up their own crazy creature and wrote a story about it.  They were very creative and I was impressed with the nonsense names they came up with!

Then in the afternoon we read, or attempted to read, Fox in Socks.  For those of you unfamiliar with that story, it if full of tongue twisters and reading it out loud can be quite a challenge.  We had fun and the kids tried to help me out a few times!

We designed our own crazy socks and then made a graph of who wore crazy socks and who did  not.

Here are my crazy socks for the day!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

This is one of my favorite times of year to be a teacher!  I LOVE Dr. Seuss' awesome books and the messages that the books give students.  We read the books and love the rhymes, but a lot of times we address the deeper meanings in the stories also.  This morning we read The Sneetches and talked about bullying and excluding people because of the way they look.  One of the students, who was feeling extra perceptive today called Sylvester McMonkey McBean a 'scam artist'.  So we talked a little bit about what a scam is. I must say, I giggled a little bit when that was yelled out!  After reading the story the students went through our star on machine and they got stars upon thars.  Each student's had a star on their belly with a math fact.  They had to find their Sneetch family by finding 4 other people who's sum equaled the same as theirs!  They had a lot of fun playing.  We then went through the star off machine and took the stars off our bellies!
They were being very good listeners!

Mrs. Carlson was in charge of getting stars upon thars.

Ooooh, nice star!!

Check out these good looking Sneetch families!

After our math fun, we came back to the class and had some time to just sit and read some Dr. Seuss books.  Some kids chose to read independently and some chose to read with a buddy!

We will continue to have more fun with Dr. Seuss this week and next week!
