ADJECTIVES!

We have been working on adjectives in class.  A couple years ago I came across this song on Pinterest and thought it had a great message.  I try to incorporate it into a lesson every now and then in the classroom.  The song lends itself well to adjectives!  We listened to the song a few times to day and then wrote down all the adjectives we heard in the song.  The students had to think of a unique adjective that described them.  They did a great job!  As more students have a turn, it gets more and more difficult to think of one no one else has said.

Here is the anchor chart we worked on last week:

Now what you have probably been waiting for, these are the adjectives the students came up with to describe themselves!

This Week...

I don't know about you all, but I think this cold weather needs to go away!  I missed my students yesterday and it sounds like it is supposed to be frigid next week too.  I am ready for the polar vortex to go away and nice normal winter weather to come visit.

We have been very busy this week!  In math we continued to work on place value and we did some subtraction review!  We did a subtraction scoot in the hallway.  Students had to find subtraction facts hidden around the school and write them on their scoot sheet. We also played Garbage.  Garbage is a fun game that we play to work on place value and determining the bigger number.

In Fundations we have been busy working on the following glued/welded sounds:
-ank, -ink, -onk, and -unk.  Below is a list of words we came up with for each of those sounds.

**Please remember to send your child to school dressed for the weather, even though we do not wait outside when it is below 5 degrees, the kids still get very cold on the bus and walking in from being dropped off.  Another thing to remember is even when the temperature is below 5 in the morning, it may warm up to 5 by the time recess comes.  If you need help with getting winter gear, please let me know, my mom loves to go garage sailing and I have a ton of winter clothes in my basement looking for a good home!

PEF Grant, SMARTboard Fun, & Welded Sounds

Our class was very lucky!  We received a grant from the Pecatonica Education Foundation for some math games for our SMARTboard.  We have been having so much fun with them the past few days!

Today we played Bubble Pop! Students worked on addition or subtraction fluency.  They had so much fun and enjoyed cheering each other on!

In Fundations we worked on finding words with our welded sounds in them.  Here is the list we came up with:

Next week in Fundations we will work on the welded sounds:  ank, ink, onk, and unk.

REMINDER!!!  11:05 Dismissal Tomorrow and No School on Monday!

Spelling City

Are you looking for a fun way to help your child learn to spell words at his/her level?  If so, check out Spelling City.  The kids have been working in Spelling City for quite some time at school now.  It is an awesome website that lets me create spelling lists and group students.  This way, students are working on learning words that are at his/her level.  The girls and boys really seem to enjoy working with this program.  If you would like your child to use Spelling City at home and they do not remember their log in information, shoot me an email or send a note in their assignment notebook.

Writing Letters

We are working hard on writing letters.  Students are writing letters and then we are editing and revising them together.  The students are then making a final copy to deliver to someone in our school.  When they finish their first letter, they get to choose anyone they want to write a letter to.  Most of them are choosing Mom and Dad.  :)  In a few weeks we will be mailing letters to family members.  Please watch for a letter to come home for you to fill out addresses for us!  We are very excited about learning to write letters and we can't wait to get to mail them.

We are in the middle of another Success Maker contest!  The kids are working so hard, and really enjoy the added challenge of out scoring the other first grade classes.

Happy New Year!

We have been having too much fun since coming back from break!  We talked about making goals for the year 2014.  I thought the kids did a good job coming up with things they wanted to accomplish.  Some of them are very ambitious!

In math we started to talk about place value.  Today we played a dice game to practice!

Assembly Fun!

Today we celebrated coming back from our LONG winter break with an assembly to honor good behavior at our school.  We had a Minute to Win It assembly where kids and teachers were the contestants.  Each child whose name was called to play a game will come home with a certificate.  Some kids also received a ruler for getting their name called, but they did not get to play a game.  The kids had so much fun.  Unfortunately, I did not get to play any of the games, because I was busy calling names and setting up games for the kids to play.
Mrs. Wanke had to inch worm her way through the cones as fast as she could!

Mrs. Log was very excited when she won Face the Cookie!

Working hard to stack those cups as high as he could!

Mrs. Brockway was a participant in block head!  She had to stack the blocks as high as she could on her head!

We had so much fun!  I am so happy to be back.  I missed these kids like crazy.  I can't believe how many of them lost teeth over break.  They all look so different!

We are SOOOO excited to be back together!

Brrrr....It is COLD!

I hope everyone is staying nice and warm on these frigid days!  We will extend the due date of the homework to Thursday and begin presentations on Friday due to not having school.  Just a reminder, Wednesday is an early dismissal day.  Students are released at 1:35.

Fundations
We will begin a new unit in fundations on Wednesday.  This week, and most of next week, we will be focusing on words that have the glued sounds ang, ing, ong, and ung.   Think fang, ring, song, lung.  There will be no fundations homework this week, we will resume fundations homework next week.  Our word wall words this week will be put, some, and come.

I can't wait to see my students!  I miss them like crazy!

Stay Warm!
