Halloween Fun!

We have been having a lot of fun celebrating Halloween so far this week.  The kids got to be poets on Monday.  Each student wrote and illustrated a poem about spiders!

The kids enjoy their reading journals so much that I decided that we should do interactive math journals also!  Our first entry in our math journal was learning about the commutative property of additon.  The kids glued matching eyeball dominoes in their journals and wrote the addition problems underneath.  So if the domino on one side was 3 + 4 = 7 the one across from it is 4 + 3 = 7.

We will continue to work in our reading and math journals throughout the year.  Thank you so much for donating supplies to help interactive journals be successful.

Halloween is tomorrow!  Please send your child to school in their NORMAL clothes!  Costumes should arrive separately in a clearly labeled bag.  I recommend discreetly initialing all costume pieces also.  It gets a little crazy with everyone trying to change at once.  Our parade will begin at 1:45.  Weather permitting it will be outdoors (although, this does NOT sound promising).  In case of rain we will parade through the gym.  Our parties will immediately follow the parade and all are welcome!

Crazy Hair Day!

These kids sure looked CRAZY with their wacky hair do's today (I might have looked a little silly also)!  We had so much fun celebrating Red Ribbon Week!  We also got a new student in our class this week, so that brings us to 16 friends in first grade!

TWINS!

One of my old friends from last year came to visit! We took a picture together. :)

We also got to have a little fun with the IPAD today.  I only had one of them, so not everyone got a turn.  I am going to check out more next week.  The kids get so excited to learn with them.

Next week our Halloween festivities will begin.  I can't wait for all the excitement next week!

Put A Cap on Drugs

Today for Red Ribbon Week we "Put a Cap on Drugs"!  Students wore their favorite hat to school.  The kids really enjoyed getting to wear a hat to school.

We got a little silly in our hats!

Unfortunately, I had to leave to take my little one to the allergist so I did not get to be part of our afternoon fun!  :(

Big shout out to Mrs. Wanke for being WREX's teacher of the week!

Red Ribbon Week

We are celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week at school.  I am just going over the basics with the kids.  I told them today that we are celebrating making healthy choices for our body and that drugs are not healthy choices unless our Dr. gives them to us.  Today all of the students wore jeans for I'm a Jean-ius Day!

In math this week we are going to continue to work on addition.  Our standard is that students should be able to add with sums to 20.  They should be able to add fluently within ten.  What that means is that they should be able to do 40 addition problems in 3 minutes and be 90% accurate.  We will continue to take timed tests at school.   Once your child meets our first grade fluency goal, they will start working on meeting the second grade fluency goal.  Being fluent with addition and subtraction will help your child immensley with their schoolwork and with life in general.   Today, we played a game called Fill Me Up where students rolled two dice and added them together.  After adding them together they graphed them on their Fill Me Up chart.

Check back in tomorrow for more Red Ribbon Week fun!

Jog-A-Thon

The kids totally ROCKED the Jog-a-Thon today!

The kids ran and walked the ENTIRE time!  I am so proud of them.  We also had a couple special little visitors.  The lady that babysits my daughters stopped by to see her grandson's run, so Whitney and Natalie got to run also!

Make sure you keep working on getting pledges, it would be totally AWESOME to get a classroom ice-cream party from Culvers!

Whitney sure tried to keep up!

Reminder:  No school on Monday!

Popcorn Graphing

To wrap up our graphing unit we had a fun celebrations with all of the first graders today.  We had four different kinds of popcorn for students to try and we graphed their favorite kind.  Caramel was the big winner, with cheddar close behind.  A few kids voted for salted and kettle corn, but not too many at all!

I also thought I would share a picture of my own little dears getting ready for Halloween!

Fire Safety Day!

Today we celebrated Fire Safety Week.  We talked about what we should do in emergency situations that involved fire.  The students were already very knowledgeable about what to do if their clothes started on fire and what to do if there was smoke in our house.

We practiced what to do at school if there was a fire.  Our entire building was able to exit in under 2 minutes today for our Fire Drill!  I was very proud of my first graders for handling the surprise fire drill like champs!

After lunch students got to go outside and learn to become mini firefighters!  Each student had a chance to spray a fire hose and they learned about all the tools on the fire truck!

Thank you Pecatonica Fire Department!

We even got a surprise visit from Sparky who was hanging out in the car!

It was pretty cool learning about all the tools!

Today was also our last day with Mrs. D.  We had a celebration to celebrate learning and following our I-Care rules!

Thank you Mrs. D for sharing your friend I-Care Cat with us!  We can't wait to see you around the halls!
